Welcome to Petite Picassos – a thoughtfully curated weekly children’s art series, hosted Tuesday mornings from August 12 through September 2 in partnership with Kohl Children’s Museum. Sessions take place outdoors in the central landscaped area at Plaza del Lago.
Designed for ages 3–8, each session invites young artists to explore hands-on creativity through guided, museum-quality projects led by trained educators from Kohl. Families can expect an engaging mix of sensory materials, seasonal themes, and open-ended expression – all set against the backdrop of Plaza del Lago’s historic charm.
Children will be introduced to the work of iconic artists including Pablo Picasso, Yayoi Kusama, Faith Ringgold, and Marc Rothko. Each child will create their own sketchbook and participate in a new hands-on art experience each week.
Weekly Themes:
Tuesday, August 12th: Be Abstract
Inspired by Picasso, young artists will explore abstract portraits using wood shapes, cardboard, and magnets. Children will begin their sketchbooks and create funny-face magnets using bold shapes and lines.
Tuesday, August 19th: Dots Are Fabulous!
Channeling the colorful world of Yayoi Kusama, children will celebrate the power of the circle through dot paintings, collage making, and a collaborative dot-covered chair project for Kohl’s Art Studio.
Tuesday, August 26th: Cityscapes
This week takes inspiration from Faith Ringgold. Children will use fabric and building blocks to design their own imaginative cityscapes before translating them into paintings or drawings to take home.
Tuesday, September 2nd: Colors Around Us
Inspired by Marc Rothko, young artists will explore color blending with tempera sticks and chalk pastels. They’ll create expressive mood paintings and add final touches to their sketchbooks.
Tickets are $35 per child and include all materials, instruction, and take-home art project(s).
100% of proceeds from this event will be donated directly to Kohl Children’s Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to early childhood learning through play.
